“Wie der Wolf” reviews the storyline of the greek tragedy “The Bacchae” by Euripides, written in 407 B.C, in which Dionysus, an exiled god who was abused and rejected by his family, returns to his hometown in order to impose his cult. Dionysus’ shadow will extend its influence to a paroxysm of violence.
Parallel to the story of the Bacchae, the other tragedy recounted in “Wie der Wolf” is that of modern Greece, which has seen the rebirth of racism in its most frightening form, that of neo-Nazism. The Greek neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn was voted by 7% of the Greek population. “The Other” has now become the target ; “the Stranger” has become the prey. The shadow grows larger and engulfs the consciousness. Greece rips apart its own children like an unleashed bacchae, in front of our very eyes, us being spectators of these events through the newscasts.
The difference between the two tragedies paralleled in Wie der Wolf is that in The Bacchae there is a cathartic function, whereas this is not the case in today´s tragedy being lived in Greece.
The problem is that this god is not like any other.
He is the god of delirium,
a delirium which can plunge into horror.
He is the god of far away,
who wants to be recognized here.
This god is the other. We see that when in a city
we think we can ignore the “other” in all its forms,
when we push “the other” away,
when the woman, the foreigner, the Asian,
the barbarian, the illusion somehow
becomes evil, then the one that represents the identity,
the security, becomes the other
and becomes a monster.
Chasing the other away from us and the city,
is becoming oneself the monster’s own head.
